Meet Natalie
My name is Natalie Standard. I am a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. I studied at Catawba College with the intention of working with children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities after graduation. Currently, I work for Swimmerman Swim School where I have worked for several years while obtaining my degree. Throughout my experience here, I develop many skills through working with children with disabilities, including Autism and Cerebral Palsy. As a swim lesson instructor, I modify tasks and explanations for each individual child, so each one could learn water safety and learn to swim regardless of mental or physical disabilities. I an challenged to be creative in my activities, encouraging my students beyond their comfort zones to overcome challenges while helping them find an enjoyment of the water.
Additionally, I recently completed my Therapeutic Recreation Internship at Camp Twin Lakes in Winder, GA. Camp Twin Lakes is an adaptive, medically supportive camp for individuals facing serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges such as Autism, Spina Bifida, and Diabetes. As an intern, I lead, adapt, and develop camp programs such as boating, arts and crafts, and group games. I am a confident, flexible leader of seasonal program staff and volunteers ensuring camp outcomes are met.
